Special Edition: A Conversation on Race and the Army, Podcast Edition
Wednesday Jul 08, 2020
Wednesday Jul 08, 2020
Americans have elevated the discussion on race following the killing of Mr. George Floyd, and that includes the U.S. Army. Further discussions and the aftermath have revealed that there are still racial injustices seen in the workplace, organizations, as well as within the military. Thereby, AUSA along with the U.S. Army are having needed, yet uncomfortable, conversations in order to gain a better understanding and allow for voices to be heard. We hope that we can learn and grow from one another.
In this special edition episode, a group of former soldiers join us to discuss their experiences with race in the Army, and also touch on how the Department of Defense and the Army are already responding to diversity and racial concerns. This program follows two AUSA webinar events featuring current and retired Army leaders discussing the same topic. Links are included below.

CASAs are the connective fiber between the American people and Secretary of the Army. They are also Great Americans. Ken Wong, CASA for Pennsylvania-East, was born and raised in Philadelphia, and joins us today to describe why he became a CASA, and how he liaises with local community leaders to share the Army story.
Civilian Aides to the Secretary of the Army (CASAs) are business and community leaders appointed by the Secretary to advise and support Army leaders across the country. They assist with recruiting, connect with local National Guard and Army Reserve units, serve as a voice for Soldiers and Army Families, and speak at community events about the Army’s message. There are over 100 CASAs throughout the U.S. and its territories, and they all have agreed to serve without salary, wages or related benefits, and are afforded a 3-star protocol status. Bring back the DivArty. COL(Ret) Dan Roper, AUSA’s Director of National Security Studies, interviews maneuver and fires senior leaders regarding the need for the Army to return control of divisional field artillery battalions to division artillery (DivArty), rather than brigade combat team (BCT), headquarters. They describe how modularity, the force structure change making FA battalions organic to BCTs beginning in 2003, while well-suited for counterinsurgency campaigns, resulted in fire support inadequate for large-scale combat operations against peer competitors. With the increasing need to converge fires and effects across multiple domains, the centralized control of fires that a DivArty headquarters can provide is essential to the joint force massing effects on an expanding and lethal battlefield. While counterintuitive to some, they make a compelling case that fire support to BCTs will be significantly enhanced by this initiative.
